Quick Summary / Abstract:

Background:
Governing boards of school districts are subject to the requirements of Education Code Section 60119, verifying that the District has sufficient textbooks or instructional materials. The governing board shall certify, through a resolution, that each pupil has been provided with a standards-aligned textbook or basic instructional materials in the four core areas of English/Language Arts, History/Social Science, Science, and Mathematics, consistent with the content and cycles of the State framework. The governing board shall determine whether each pupil enrolled in foreign language or health classes has sufficient instructional materials. The governing board shall also determine the availability of laboratory science equipment offered in grades 9-12 inclusive.

In 2011, the Governor and State Legislature extended the suspension of the Instructional Materials Funding and Realignment Program's '24-month rule,' which required districts to purchase new textbooks and instructional materials within 24 months of adoption by the State Board of Education. The change to the adoption cycle does not relieve districts from the requirements related to 'sufficiency' of instructional materials. Pursuant to Education Code 60119, districts must continue to provide students with 'sufficient' standards-aligned instructional materials, hold a public hearing, and adopt a sufficiency resolution.

Status:
Resolution No. 011-23/24 has been prepared to certify that the Livermore Valley Joint Unified School District has complied with the requirements of Education Code Section 60119, regarding provision of standards-aligned instructional materials for all students.
Fiscal Impact:
Instructional materials were purchased using Local Control Funding Formula (LCFF) and Lottery Funds.
