Quick Summary / Abstract:
Background: The Livermore Valley Joint Unified School District (LVJUSD) is committed to developing courses that provide students with a wide-range of opportunities to prepare students to “contribute and thrive in a changing world.” Our Board of Education encourages creating new courses and updating courses that are engaging to our students and prepare them for success in the 21st Century. These new courses include the California State Standards and support students in their pursuit of college and career readiness.
Status Our high school teachers regularly review course offerings to ensure content reflects current standards and is relevant and applicable. Based on our strong commitment to engage all learners, the following new courses are being proposed in the World Languages Department. The following two courses are being presented for consideration and approval at the March 15th Board Meeting.

Updated Courses:

German I A/B

This course facilitates learning to understand, interpret, and analyze what is heard, read, or viewed in German on a variety of topics. Learners interact and negotiate meaning in spoken, signed, or written conversations to share information, reactions, feelings, and opinions. Students present information, concepts, and ideas to inform, explain, persuade, and narrate on a variety of topics using appropriate media and adapting to various audiences of listeners, readers, or viewers. Students in the class will be required to think, compare and contrast their way of life, their likes and dislikes, with other cultures. Students will use higher-level thinking skills to contemplate cultural and social issues while using a second language.

German II A/B

This course will allow students to develop “Intermediate” level skills which include speaking and writing in complete, discrete sentences, rather than rote words and phrases, dealing with language challenges that require the students to create with the language and circumlocute to navigate communication in the target language. They will also begin to develop “Advanced” level skills which include narrating in all major time frames and stating and supporting opinions. The breadth of vocabulary will also expand beyond the familiar, everyday language tasks to include social and professional situations that require a deeper understanding of the German language and culture.
Fiscal Impact Instructional materials will be purchased from our District-established Instructional Materials budget using Local Control Funding Formula and Lottery funds.
