Background:
|
On October 5, 2015, the Governor approved the passage of Senate Bill (SB) No. 359 (Mitchell). This Senate bill created the California Mathematics Placement Act of 2015. SB 359 requires governing boards of local educational agencies (LEAs) that serve 9th grade students to regularly report at a public meeting their “fair, objective, and transparent” math placement policies. This report focuses on entering 9th grade students and should include: 1) the multiple measures used to assess the placement of students; 2) the process for reevaluations of placement once the school year begins; 3) the annual review of aggregate placement data; and 4) the appeal process for students and their families.

In previous years, the Livermore Valley Joint Unified School District (LVJUSD) used a multiple measures approach known as the LVJUSD Mathematics Placement Matrix to establish the placement of a student entering grades 6 through 9. This Matrix used data from each student’s California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP) scores (previous two years); the student’s results on the Mathematics Diagnostic Testing Project assessment (MDTP); the student’s math grades for both Trimester One and Two; as well as teacher recommendation.
The MDTP was administered to 5th and 8th grade students in the spring of 2021. Our Math Teachers on Special Assignment prepared the Matrix data and presented it to each 5th and 8th grade math teacher to review for proper placement. Although 2021 CASSPP results are embargoed (not released to the public), we were able to use the initial release data for the math placement matrix. This allowed LVJUSD to meet the placement act criteria of, “fair, objective, and transparent” math placement policies.
Once the school year began, any new students to our District are either assessed using the MDTP or evaluated based on their previous school district’s transcript. In addition, within the first thirty days of the school year, teachers reevaluate any student that they observe could benefit from a different placement.
There is an established LVJUSD Mathematics Course Flowchart designed to help map out the possible pathways to math success. Each year, a student may be reassessed and placed on the math pathway that would offer the greatest opportunity for success. There is a defined Mathematics Placement Appeal process should parents/guardians wish to place their child in a different course other than what the Matrix process would have determined.
