Quick Summary / Abstract:
Background: We work closely with many partners to expand opportunities for students and staff in the areas of science, engineering and mathematics. In 2016, Livermore Valley Joint Unified School District (LVJUSD) represented by Regina Brinker, our science and engineering Teacher on Special Assignment, Nadine Horner from Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL), and then-mayor of Livermore, John Marchand, worked together to declare February as Science and Engineering Month. This has been such a successful endeavor that each of the contributing members desired to continue with the tradition.
Status Our 22nd Annual Science Odyssey will be held virtually again this year. Students will prepare a wide array of projects focused on engineering, math, the environment and behavioral sciences. Thanks to generous community and business support, cash prizes will be offered to winners in each category. Also, due to the huge success of its fall program, the Girls Who Code program will offer a spring program to students this year. Over 100 students from our Middle and High schools, as well as over twenty mentors from Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, participated in the fall. We are also entering into a new and exciting partnership with Quest Science Center in support of STEM in our schools.

Resolution No. 029-20/21 has been prepared to encourage our District staff and students, along with the community as a whole, to observe February as Science and Engineering Month.
Fiscal Impact There is no impact to the General Fund. LVJUSD-sponsored events for Science and Engineering Month are paid through the Curriculum gift account; other events are sponsored by community and business partners, and Las Positas Community College.
Superintendent's Recommendation: Adopt, by roll call vote, Resolution No. 029-20/21, Celebrating Science and Engineering Month.
