Quick Summary / Abstract: Staff will present an update of Mental Health & Social Emotional Learning Tiered Interventions and Supports.
Background: Over the last four years, our District has put in place a Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) to create a Framework for Success that focuses on the academic, behavior, and social emotional learning needs of all students. As part of MTSS we use data to make informed decisions for identifying student needs as well as the supports provided within the three tiers.

To better understand the social/emotional learning needs of our students, our District utilizes multiple measures to gauge student mental health and the need for services. To track behavior trends and needs, we have begun to use the School-Wide Information System (SWIS). Utilization data from Care Solace provides information on the mental health challenges our students and families are experiencing.
Status Since the 2017-18 school year we have been developing a strong foundation of Tier 1 Social Emotional Learning and Behavior supports including Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS), Trauma Informed Schools, Choose Love Social Emotional Learning, and Mental Health Awareness. Within an MTSS model, approximately 80% of students have their instructional needs met at the Tier 1 level. At the Tier 2 level, which provides additional support and intervention to 15% of students, we offer Kid Connection at the elementary school level and Check-In/Check-Out at all grade levels, as well as site-based counseling. In an MTSS model, Tier 3 provides more intensive interventions and supports to approximately 5% of students. Tier 3 social emotional learning and behavior supports include counseling as part of an Individualized Education Program (IEP) or through an outside agency.

The next steps in establishing our District’s strong, sustainable MTSS for social emotional learning and behavior include continuing our PBIS and Choose Love implementation at all school sites, ongoing Mental Health Awareness Trainings for staff and parents, expanding the Teen Mental Health First Aid (tMHFA) trainings to other high schools, establishing Wellness Centers at more school sites, and providing trauma informed professional development for staff.
Fiscal Impact Costs associated with assessments are paid using our District-established assessment budget. MTSS and PBIS are funded through the Local Control Funding Formula.
