Quick Summary / Abstract:
Background: A key component to our LVJUSD Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) Framework for Success has been Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS). According to the National Center on Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports, PBIS is an evidence-based three-tiered framework to improve and integrate all data, systems, and practices affecting student outcomes every day. Emphasis is placed on the process or approach, rather than on a specific curriculum. Using all available data, school teams can effectively identify strengths and needs of their individual school. Results from research studies show that the impact of PBIS implementation in schools led to improved academic achievement, reduced student discipline referrals and suspensions, and improved social emotional functioning.
Status In 2018, LVJUSD introduced PBIS to our first 5-school cohort. Utilizing the 3-tiered structure of PBIS, all 18 schools have now implemented PBIS at various levels. Our District has continued its commitment to PBIS by partnering with the Santa Clara County Office of Education (SCCOE), to provide Tier 2 and 3 training as PBIS teams work toward building capacity and sustainability of Tier 1 foundational supports.

One of the long range goals of our District's MTSS Framework for Success Initiative is to establish and advance an interconnected systems framework (ISF) to support the whole child. “ISF applies the core features of MTSS to deliberately integrate mental health, community, school, and family partners through a single system of support.” (Fact Sheet Interconnected Systems Framework 101: An introduction, Mental Health Technology Transfer Center Network in collaboration with Office of Special Education Technical Assistance Center). Initial steps include mapping resources to identify what is currently in place, examining the fidelity of implementation, and determining what resources have a positive effect on student outcomes.

Each new school year can bring excitement and joy, but also apprehension and adjustment to new routines. This year has brought additional challenges, not the least of which is the anticipation of how students and staff will feel returning to school after months of distance learning and isolation from each other. Staff will present a video Dr. Kira Mauseth, a Clinical Psychologist and member of the Behavioral Health Strike Team at Washington State Department of Health, who discusses the effects that COVID-19 has had neurologically and behaviorally on students and caregivers and offers evidence-based strategies to address the well-being of students and self-care for all.
Fiscal Impact Costs associated with PBIS are funded through the Local Control Funding Formula (LCFF) in alignment with the Local Control and Accountability Plan (LCAP).
