Quick Summary / Abstract:
Staff will present an overview of the support offered to students with disabilities through our schools and the Special Education Department.
Background:
The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) requires school districts to provide a Free and Appropriate Public Education (FAPE) to eligible children with special needs. The Livermore Valley Joint Unified School District (LVJUSD) continues to have a strong commitment to develop systems of supports for our students with special needs by creating and supporting effective programming and instruction to meet each student's unique needs. Over the last year, LVJUSD has continued to create new types of programs to better meet the needs of students in Special Education. This has included expanding co-teaching and our Learning Centers, and widening our ability to meet the needs of students with mental health challenges. In addition, the professional learning strategy for our staff in Special Education has become a model for other districts in the Tri-Valley. Each month, our new teachers receive three hours of direct professional development which has increased retention, efficacy, and overall job satisfaction.
Status
:
Students in Special Education are afforded a Free and Appropriate Public Education. Programs and services are developed to meet the individual needs of students so they can contribute and thrive in a changing world.
Fiscal Impact
:
The federal mandate for service makes Special Education different from most educational programs in that Special Education nearly always exceeds the federal funding set aside for them. In effect, school districts must meet their mandate to serve students with disabilities while also supporting other budgeted programs.
